Trimarni Clermont Camp - Pre-camp recap

I absolutely LOVE our training camps.  How can you not love the idea of checking out of life for a few days just to train, eat and sleep with your fellow teammates?  I love the positive energy of our campers on the first day, eager to train, sleep and eat. I also love the looks I get around day 3 of the camp when our campers are tired, exhausted and sore. But above all, I love the friendships that are made between our athletes. There is so much hard work going on that it's hard to not give 100% when everyone is supporting one another. In a group environment, you have no choice but to soften the excuses and give your best effort even when you think you can't. It's simply incredible to see our athletes discover new limits, embrace new challenges and to support one another.  I always have a few goals for our training camps and safety is on the top of that list. But another big goal is fun. I want my athletes to have a lot of fun while training because for many of ...

Trimarni Clermont 4-day Training camp - quick recap

We can't believe that the Trimarni camp is over! We are SO proud of our Trimarni campers who accomplished amazing things with their bodies throughout the 4-day Trimarni Clermont Triathlon Training camp. Our 20 Trimarni athlete/campers completed 3 workouts a day for 3 days in a row and finished the camp with the Great Clermont Olympic Distance Triathlon.   That's 12 hours of training completed in 72 hours prior to racing for 2+ hours on Sunday! Our athletes are simply incredible!   First off, I have to give a HUGE Thank You to our sponsors for having quality gear/products that we trust, use and recommend. Thank you for hooking-up our campers!!!! Clif Bar Oakley and Oakley Women Veronica's Health Crunch Xterra Wetsuits Training Peaks Run In Xterra Wetsuits And Salt Stick  for helping out our campers as well with sample electrolyte pills.  When athletes train together, they bring out greatness and awesomness in each other.  There is littl...

The underfueling athlete

The goal of any training plan is to elicit performance gains which are best experienced on race day.  Within any given training plan, there is a method and purpose to the workouts. I often find that athletes have irrational and unrealistic approaches to fueling and it's now cool to not eat before or during workouts. This needs to change. Athletes. you understand the importance of eating for fuel and for health but why is it that you can be so focused on your workouts but lose all good judgement when it comes to nourishing and fueling your body?  I realize that a plant strong diet, rich in whole foods like fruits and veggies isn't very sexy. However, an extreme diet plan that restricts certain foods is really something to talk about with your training partners.  Eating before a workout and consuming calories during workouts is now seen as bad. It's totally hard core to talk about how little you can consume during a workout and how much more metabolic...

2 time-crunched workouts

Everything in moderation. You have probably heard this saying a lot when it comes to the diet but what about when applied to an athlete's workout regime? Well, I don't want to be a moderate athlete. I want to be the best athlete I can be. Because my season is focused on endurance racing, I know that there is a specific training regime that I need to follow and accomplish to be mentally and physically prepared for my races. However, just because I have training plan for the week, this doesn't mean that it can never change. Understanding that life brings changes, stressful moments and days when free-time to train is extremely limited.  I never sacrifice my diet, sleep or work to train. Work pays the bills and my diet and sleep contribute to performance gains. I have learned through making many mistakes in my endurance training and racing lifestyle over the past 9 years that the quality of workouts matter more than the quality. Additionally, I constantly...

Meet Mr. Llama

A few days ago I talked about the fun that I had at the   Reedy River 10K . It was a training race so that meant back to business this week. Well, I have no trouble getting my workouts done but if I am not having fun, there's no point to my training. So....here's what made me smile this morning. I want to introduce you to Mr. Llama.  One of my favorite things about cycling is what you see while you are just riding along. A former nutrition athlete of mine in Greenville told me that I had to see this Llama in a pasture on Old White Horse Road that will run over to you when you say "Hey Llama!". I'm so happy that she told me about this furry friend! We had an athlete of ours (Justine) in town for a RETUL fit (performed by Karel) and a complete overhaul on her bike (new handlebars, new cassette, new chain, new bar tape) with a detailed inside/out cleaning. It's a highlight to show our friends/athletes our amazing country cycling r...

Happy National RD day!

3.5 years ago my passion turned into a career and I became a Registered Dietitian. I am so happy that I took the time to go back to school after graduate school to further my knowledge and meet the requirements to be eligible to take the RD exam.  Many people use the title nutritionist, nutrition expert or nutrition specialist but I am incredibly proud to be one of a select group of professionals who can be a nutrition expert and place "RD" behind our name. My credential does not mean that I know everything. I am a Registered Dietitian that specializes in sport nutrition for endurance athletes. I follow a strict code of ethics and when I don't know something, I know that there are many other RD's who specialize in areas that I am not an expert in.  Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist regardless of education, experience or background.  There are dozens of meal plans, books, articles, counseling sessions and tips provided by nutrition exper...

Broccoli slaw tahini stir fry - batch cooking

Batch cooking is a life saver. If you are an athlete, you know the feeling post-workout when you are hungry and two thoughts come to mind: You think about what you should eat to refuel and nourish your body and then you think about the time it will take to prepare the meal, cook the meal and eventually eat the meal. We all know that a bowl of cereal can be "made" in less than 5 minutes but so can leftovers - heated in the microwave. Healthy eating takes effort but when you are an athlete, you have to be dedicated to nourishing your body. The added stress from training makes the body more vulnerable to sickness, injury and fatigue. Food is your medicine and your fuel. Although you may feel like the extra time in your life that could be devoted to meal prep is taken up by training, sorry - your excuse is invalid... you still have to make the time to cook. Every now and then the stars will align and you jump with  joy that you have the free time to cook a home cooked mea...
