Tips for racing under pressure

Do race day jitters affect your mind on race week? Do you feel an ache in your tummy that you just can't seem to shake until you start the race? I remember my first IM ('06 IMFL) and I was so excited to race! I wouldn't say I was super nervous but I did have a few pre-race worries. It was a bit chilly out and the wind was howling. As if the Ironman distance wasn't tough enough! Could my 24 year old body survive 140.6 miles for the very first time....is my heart strong enough to beat for 11+ hours? My racing strategy and fitness has certainly changed since I won my age group at my very first Ironman but with every race, there is always something on my mind that drains a little bit of my race day energy.  Just to make sure that you do not feel alone, no matter the race, I always have some type of pre-race nerves on race day morning. No race is easy and never do I arrive to a race with 100% confidence that this race will be my best race ever. Oddly enough, the races...

Joy to carbs

I can't believe that in today's society, I have to put on a game face and boxing gloves when it comes to talking about carbohydrates. As a sport RD, it just boggles my mind that I have to convince athletes to consume carbohydrates in the diet (and before, during and after workouts) in order to improve performance, support the immune system and to keep an athlete strong and healthy. It takes a lot of extra effort to encourage athletes to consume carbs (and sport nutrition) when they are seeking body composition changes but since the "experts" are giving unhealthy and unnecessary advice, then I guess it's my job to not only provide realistic, practical and safe nutrition advice but also lead by example. (As always, with experience as a clinical RD, working inpatient in the hospital, I treat every athlete as an individual and never do I overlook clinical/personal issues when it comes to tweaking the diet. Thus, another reason why I am not a fan of mass marketed diet...

Off season: Turning into a non-triathlete

Countdown to race Kona for me and Karel....One year and one week away!  It's been almost 4 weeks since Karel and I raced IMWI and our lifestyle has changed dramatically. If you lived a day in the life of Marni and Karel right now, you would be doing a lot of the following: No structured workouts, no workout schedule, no intense exercise, very little gym time and no alarms for workouts. Guess what... We are LOVING every day of it! This is all part of our master plan to prep for Kona 2015....we are turning into non-triathletes for 6 full weeks. Although this may seem like a long time to do absolutely no structured training, it is very needed and perhaps long over due.  I was extremely fortunate this year to have an injury-free season. Both Karel and I raced to our full potential at each of our planned races and our bodies did not disappoint us. We never experienced the slightest itch of burnout or fatigue and most of all, we loved the journey of becoming the...

Exciting news for Trimarni...Coming soon!

How true is this? To devote so much time, energy, money and effort to one goal and to finally have it pay off. What a great feeling! I realize that not every athlete has the race of his/her life all the time and sometimes we have a bad race and we just have to let it go.  But we must remember that hard work goes somewhere. It may not be immediately seen but the hard work is not without a purpose. Maybe it doesn't show on a piece of paper that the world sees but within yourself you have become a better, stronger and smarter person and athlete. We are currently working on our 2015 racing schedule which I will share with the world, as I did last  this past season.  But in the mean time, I want to share some exciting new things that will be happening with Trimarni Coaching and Nutrition for 2015.  COACHING We are really excited about our new coaching services for 2015. We will have 3 different services to offer athletes in addition to pre-built pla...

Women's Fitness Summit - quick recap, beyond body image

The fitness and diet/nutrition industry (and the many books, products, foods and pills) is primarily marked toward women. There appears to be an ongoing pressure that women should achieve this ideal look or size according to the media. Although there are many mixed messages as to the image of a female, many women feel that if they do not look a certain way, she is lazy, doesn't take care of herself, ugly, fat, a failure and unhealthy. I realize that not everyone feels this way and certainly this sounds absolutely absurd to think that we (as women) would feel this enormous amount of pressure to look a certain way to improve our self-worth or to improve success....but sadly, body image is getting in the way of health, happiness, performance and quality of life.  And this is not limited to women.  It seems as though so many athletes are always looking for the next best thing. The latest and greatest, the easiest, quickest and most simple method to improve health, body ...

Excellent mental tips from Dr. G!

I can't believe that it was almost a year ago when I was heading to the Big Island of Kona for my third Ironman World Championship!! My mental coach and BFF Gloria met me on the island and we spent the next 10 days together in complete island happiness. It was one amazing experience filled with laughs, love, positivity, inspiration and gratefulness.  Since our jobs revolve around working with athletes, Gloria and I both made good use of our time in Kona by creating a series of videos (mental tips from Gloria and nutrition tips from me) to help out other athletes. We wanted to provide tips that would make athletes of all levels feel more comfortable and confident before and during important races.  Gloria, as a licensed sport psychologist always provides the best advice....in other words, she can think logically when we (as athletes) can not. She speaks with a big heart and without a rollercoaster of emotions inside her mind/body (like us athletes sometimes). Gloria just...

Why YOU train... inspiration/motivation coming at ya!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! 228 amazing, inspiring, motivating female endurance athletes have completed my Female Endurance Survey that I shared 2 days ago.  I have learned so much from your responses and I am really looking forward to presenting some interesting findings at the Women's Fitness Summit   and to eventually share on my blog and via presentations to women's tri/running groups. You all gave so much fantastic feedback for me as a RD who specializes in sport nutrition. I believe that the info you provided is not only helpful for me since my main focus is on fueling the endurance athlete's body as well as learning to eat for fuel and for healthy AND developing a healthy relationship with food and the body BUT to share with other sport nutrition professionals. I also hope that I connect with the many sport nutrition companies out there so they can better understand how female athletes think about their body, fuel their body and choose/tolerate...
