France Cycling: Col d' Izoard (Guillestre side)

  STATS Total miles: ~18.6  Total elevation gain:  4,528 to 4,626 feet Average grade: Miles ~0-9: ~2.5-3%. Miles ~9-18: ~8-10% Altitude at summit:  7,743 feet ROUTE BREAKDOWN Miles 0-~10 Beginning in Guillestre, the route follows a gentle, false-flat, twisty route alongside the beautiful Guil river. You will pass through a few short tunnels. Traffic can be heavy but we never felt unsafe. The road continues to climb up gradually. You will reach a roundabout and turn left.  Miles ~10-16 After the round about you head towards Les Moulins and then to the village of Arvieux. This is where the gradient starts to kick up. For the next several miles, there are long stretches (which can be windy) ahead of you. The average grade is between 7-10% but there are sections between 10-12%. Embrunman Race Week

  Wednesday:  After our 4-hour drive from Geneva, we arrived to our Airbnb (~3/4 mile up the hill from the city center) around 1:40pm and after unloading our stuff in our Airbnb, we drove less than a mile to the packet pick up in the town. We then did a quick grocery store shop at the local SPAR (there's a bigger grocery store, Intermarche Super, just south of the town) and drove back to our Airbnb (up a hill, which is also on the last descend of the bike course). Around 4:30pm, we headed out on our bikes to ride a little of the reverse of the bike course (we climbed up the last descend) and then made our way towards the lake (which is known for their massive aqua park (inflatables on the lake). The lake was very beautiful and it was nice to see that it was separate from another part of the lake (which had boats) - which made our lake very clean for swimming.
